13 Trail Blazing Transgender Celebrities


The world has accepted that there are different sexual orientations humans are born with. And the fashion as well as the entertainment industry including fashion designers, movie producers and publications have been playing a significant role in welcoming different sexual views in their different areas of business. Since transgender models, and actors are now soaring high in the entertainment industry thanks to Gay rights and transgender activists, more and more people are now becoming open about their real sex while others are opting for the surgery. Here are some of those activists with leading voices encouraging people born in the wrong bodies to get into the real bodies they always wanted.

Chaz Bono


Chaz Bono, son of Cher and Sonny Bono was already a visible LGBT activist before disclosing that he’s a transgender man. He underwent female-to-male gender transition between 2008 and 2010. He legally changed his gender and name in May 2010.

Carmen Carrera

Carmen, reality television personality, model, burlesque performer, and actress gained international prominence for appearing on the third season of the Logo reality television series RuPaul’s Drag Race, as well as its spin-off series RuPaul’s Drag U. According to reports, Carrera is a transgender woman even though she was presented as male during the third season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She has been active in the fight against discrimination of transgender women, blurring of gender identity particularly for transgender women, and the use of transphobic language. In fact, she has been the poster girl for transgender rights and other related issues by leading a campaign to become a Victoria’s Secret Angel. She also posed for a poster for Life Ball, depicted with both male and female genitalia to represent the blurring of gender identity.

Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox is an American actress, reality television star, television producer, and transgender rights activist. She is one of the leading voices of the LGBT movement. Apart from being a big LGBT advocate, she recently made history as the first openly transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the acting category, and the first to be nominated for an Emmy Award since composer/musician Angela Morley in 1990.

Jenna Talackova

Jenna is a Canadian model and television personality. She received world notoriety in 2012 when she successfully waged a legal fight against Beauties of Canada Organization and the Trump Organization to be allowed to compete in the Miss Universe Canada after being initially disqualified for being a trans woman. She was later allowed to participate after huge public pressure finishing in the Top 12. Jenna Talackova also starred on E! Televisions reality series ‘Brave New Girls’ and in several other publications including Elle Canada.

Isis King

Isis King is an American fashion model as well as a fashion designer. She contested on both the eleventh cycle and the seventeenth cycle of the reality television show America’s Next Top Model. As the first trans woman to compete on the show despite ANTM had a not-so-secret policy that only those who were born biologically female could compete on the show, she became one of the most visible transgender people on television.  She has appeared on the Tyra Banks’ Show and also appeared on CNN’s Larry King Live, drawing national and prime time attention to issues of gender transitioning and gender expression. Isis King has modeled for big clothing companies including American Apparel.

Janet Mock

Janet is an American writer, transgender rights activist, author and the former staff editor of People magazine’s website. Following her disclosure that she’s a transgender woman, the charismatic New York Times best-selling author, and Marie Claire contributing editor has become one of the leading voices of the LGBT movement.

Claudia Charriez



Claudia Charriez started acting and modeling when she was only 16. She was the first transgender model on the Tyra Banks series America’s Next Top Model. Based on reports, the flamboyant model, Claudia Charriez has maintained a low profile after the trial of her ex-boyfriend New York Firefighter Taylor Murphy who was found not-guilty of assaulting the transgender model.

Andrej Pejic

The boundary-pushing model/LGBT advocate is a transgender woman, who until 2014 was billed as an androgynous male model, self-described as living “in between genders”.

Candis Cayne

Candis drew International attention for portraying “Carmelita Rainer”, a transgender mistress on the former ABC series Dirty Sexy Money’. The role made history and Cayne became the first transgender actress to play recurring roles on primetime television. She has also been active in the transsexual activism and calls the LGBT community “the last great minority” and supports the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Candis Cayne has featured in several television shows including hits like ‘Nip Tuck’ , ‘CSI: New York’, and the hit CBS crime series Elemenary’ staring Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Lui. It has lately been rumored that the Bravo Network will be casting Candis Cayne on its the Real Housewives’ franchise.
