DIY Home Remedies For Skin Lightening


The color of the skin depends largely on the amount of melanin it contains. The lower the amount of melanin, the lighter the skin, and vice versa. However, a lighter and brighter skin is more attractive and calls for attention more than its dark counterpart. To achieve a better and healthier lighter skin, dedicated personal skin care is required, and the good thing is they will cost you less as you can use normal food ingredients from your kitchen.

Below are some effective ‘Do It Yourself’ natural home remedies that would brighten the skin and give it a natural glow. Basically, what these treatments do is to restrict the production of melanin in the skin so that it can retain a desired light skinned complexion. Let’s have a tour on food items you can use for your skin and several ways to apply them.

1. Yogurt

Yogurt contains lactic acid which has the most gentle alpha hydroxy acids. This acid helps to exfoliate dead cells on the skin’s surface to make it smoother and lighter. Yogurt is also used to suppress the melanin production of the skin and it has many nutrients that the skin needs to glow. There are several ways to apply yogurt on your skin, alone and in combination with other ingredients.

a. Apply half cup of plain yogurt on the skin and rub in gently. Leave it for a few minutes and then rinse body with lukewarm water. Apply daily to completely lighten the skin.

b. Yogurt + Lemon juice + Oatmeal

Process: Mix all three ingredients in a bowl into a paste. Then apply this on the skin and let it sit for about 15 – 25 minutes. Wash off with water and repeat this process regularly to prevent the dark pigmentation of the skin.

c. Yogurt + Honey

Process: Mix 1 tablespoon of Yogurt with 1 to 2 teaspoons of Honey. Stir well and apply on dark patches of the skin. Wash off after 30 minutes with warm water. Regular application of this mixture twice a day would get a more desired result.

d. Yogurt + Tomato

Process: Add 2 tablespoonfuls of yogurt to one small tomato that has been mashed. Mix well and apply this on the face and neck and leave it for 20 – 30 minutes. Wash it with water and repeat this process as needed to get rid of dark skin problems. You can also add 2 teaspoons of oatmeal to the mixture to give a lighter look, but this application should be washed off with lukewarm water.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is known to be one of the best skin care plants. It contains a compound called Aloesin which helps to inhibit tyrosinase activity and this regulates the melanin production in the skin, making the skin fairer than ever.

Process: Cut open an aloe vera leaf to extract its gel. Apply the gel on the skin where you have dark discoloration and leave it in all day. Continue this gel application on the dark skin for 4 times a day on daily basis for 15 days. You  can reduce the number of times you apply it when the effect becomes evident.

3. Cucumber


Cucumber is known to have a cooling effect on the skin when applied regularly and this is suitable for all skin types. It binds the skin collagen and ensures a more firm and supple skin.

a. Place a thin slice of cucumber directly on the dark patches of the skin where you want to lighten up the skin. Allow the skin to absorb the nutrients then wash the skin with lukewarm water.

b. Place on the eyes to remove eye bags and dark circles around the eyes.

c. Cucumber + Honey + Cold water

Process: Blend cucumber and mix well with honey, then applied the mixture on the face, neck and hands and wash with cold water after 15 – 30 minutes.

d. Cucumber juice + Lemon Juice

Process: Take equal quantities of lemon juice and cucumber juice in a bowl (1 – 2 teaspoonful each) Stir it well and apply this on the face and neck. Allow it to sit for about 15 – 20 minutes or till it dries completely. Wash it with water and repeat routine on daily basis to achieve a brighter, younger and even skin tone.

4. Rice Powder

Rice contains Para aminobenzoic acid which is a natural sunscreen. This acid also facilitates the raise in vitamin C level in the body which is a very essential vitamin for healthy skin. Rice also contains ferulic acid, an anti-oxidant, and vitamin E, and all these are essential for preventing skin dehydration and aging. They protect the skin from harmful toxins and finally give you a brighter skin tone.

Process: Grind raw rice into fine powder and add sufficient amount of milk, or water to it. Stir properly and apply the paste on your face, neck and other darker parts of the skin. Rinse off with warm water after 20 – 30 minutes. Repeat this 2 to 3 times a week to completely get rid of the dark skin.

5. Fresh Tomatoes


Fresh tomatoes have natural whitening properties, it is rich in vitamin C and also very good for oily skin and acne infected skins. Tomato has natural acidic composition that balances the pH of the skin to prevent the excessive oil, it also contains anti-oxidant properties which fight against free radicals that stop your skin from looking smooth and young.

a. Blend one small tomato to extract its pulp. Apply the juice all over the body then allow to dry completely. Apply a second coating of this pulp on the same applied skin, then massage the skin for a minute of two. Rinse skin with water after 15 – 25 minutes.

b. Tomato juice + Lemon juice

Process: Add 1 tablespoon of  tomato juice and few drops of lemon juice in  a bowl. Mix well and apply on the skin, then rinse it with water after 15 minutes. Note that this mixture might cause a little burning sensation on the skin for people with sensitive skin. To avoid this, add water to the mixture before applying.

c. Tomato juice + Buttermilk

Process: Add 2 teaspoons tomato juice to 4 teaspoons of buttermilk in a bowl. Mix well and apply on the face, neck and other dark parts of skin using either cotton ball or your fingers. Allow it to sit for about 30 – 40 minutes and then rinse it thoroughly. This process is especially beneficial for the people who got scotched by the sun.

d. Tomato + Avocado + Warm water

Process: Mash one small tomato into one small avocado pulp. Mix properly and apply the paste on the face and other dark skin parts. Rinse off with warm water after 30 – 45 minutes. This process is used to lighten people who have mixed or combination skin
