The US 2016 Presidential elections which is to be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, will be the 58th quadrennial presidential election of the country. The current president, Barrack Obama’s term will expire by 20th January, 2017 after which he will vacate the White House, having served the constitutionally allowed two-terms. The US Presidential elections is basically a keen contest between two major political parties – the Democrats and the Republicans, and if the approval ratings listed by Gallup during President Obama’s second term which is between 40 and 50 percent is anything to go by, it may mean that the pendulum of victory will swing to the side of the Democratic Party in the 2016 election.

As at the time of this article, over 30 persons have declared their interest in running for the top political seat in the US by doing one or both of these: formally announced their candidacy for the presidential nomination within their party or filling as their party’s presidential candidate with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) (other than for exploratory purposes). But this article will focus on the 16 candidates who have so far declared in public, their intention to vie for the presidential seat, come 2016 on the platform of the two most vocal political parties in the US, which is the Democratic Party (4) and the Republican Party (12).

The Democratic National Convention, where a candidate will be selected to be the party’s flag-bearer at the presidential polls by party delegates will be held on the 25th – 28th of July, 2016 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania while the Republican Party will hold theirs in Cleveland, Ohio on the 18th – 21st of July, 2016.
